Virtual Exhibition

Guiding Lights: Stories of Home, Memory, and Belonging.

This exhibition is a collaboration between artist Eibhlín Göppert, woodwork specialist David Burke, and ARCA: Romanian Forum for Refugees and Migrants. It emerges from a series of art workshops with Ukrainian children at ARCA, where we explored personal definitions of home in the context of forced migration.

Using wood, collage, monoprinting, and writing, the children have created light-based installations that offer both individual and collective responses to displacement. Their works express resilience, nostalgia, and the enduring connections that transcend borders. While objects and special places hold significance in their idea of home, the children most often described it as a feeling—one of warmth, security, and belonging that extends beyond any physical space.

I hope this exhibition space evokes that same sense of comfort and connection, as some feelings are too complex to be captured in a single image. The interplay of light and shadow serves as both a metaphor and a medium—illuminating personal narratives while inviting visitors to reflect on these deeply personal yet universal themes.

This exhibition is intended as a space for dialogue—between those forced to leave their homes and those who have chosen to migrate, fostering an exchange of experiences and a deeper understanding of displacement.

Thank you for being part of this conversation.

This project was made possible through the dedication of ARCA, whose work provides vital support and a sense of belonging for those forced to leave their homes.

The Wooden Collaged Homes

Glowing in the darkness, these illuminated wooden houses stand as fragile yet radiant testaments to the memories and emotions of Ukrainian children. Each piece reflects their connection to home—whether as a place left behind, a longing, or a hope for the future.

Set against the shadows, these houses shine as beacons of resilience, reminding us that home is not just a place but a feeling—one that can be rebuilt, reimagined, and reclaimed.
